In Tennessee we know that warmer weather in the Spring will bring ants to our cookouts, followed closely by mosquitoes and other stinging pests in our yards, but, What about Autumn? Autumn is a wonderful time of the year when kids start a new school year and it's finally cool enough that parents can begin getting some of that yard work they've put off done. Speaking of cooler weather let's talk about what types of pests may try to enter your home in the fall.
Mice-I consider mice as my number 1 fall pest based on the number of calls my company receives each year. As overnight temperatures cool mice, just like us, are looking for ways to stay warm, our homes provide just that protection.
Spiders-Autumn is spider breeding season, which, is evidenced by the number of webs you will encounter in your eaves and porch overhangs. You may also notice those webs contain orange balls that are actually egg sacs.
Wildlife-Opossums, skunks, and raccoons, like mice are looking for a place to call home for the winter, crawl spaces and attics seem to provide just what they are looking for. Don't ever discount how much damage these critters can do, every year we receive numerous calls where an animal has destroyed someone's duct work and replacing the damage can be expensive.
The best way to prevent havin to call a professional in the winter months is control pests inside your structure the rest of the year, I am a big believer in exclusionary types of measures, such as, caulking any holes or cracks, mking sure foundation vents are screened, and checking weather stripping around doors to prevent insect and rodent entry. I would also look at hiring a pest control company as pest control company as we professionals are highly trained at spotting pest entry points for a nominal fee. I would suggest calling a family owned local company as you will generally get a better service at a lower price.
